Extended Family Sessions for the Holidays

Fall is here which is our favorite time of year at Dream Focus Studio.  Families get together and it’s time to celebrate each other. It’s the best time to take what we call “extended family” portraits.  Extended family portraits means more than one immediate family.   Here are a few tips for your extended family photo shoot:

1.  Dress to impress.

Take the time to plan out the wardrobe. Talk to everyone in the family about styling and read our what to wear guide.  Make it easy for the family by choosing 2-3 color tones to stay in. Make sure one is a neutral.

2.  Consider your home as  a location.

Your home is where you create memories with your family.  You don’t have to worry about the weather or giving directions.  Your family will already be there for the holidays so let us come to you!!

3.  Prepare the family for a good time.

Be positive with your family about doing pictures.  Make sure to get everyone enthusiastic about the process. This feeling will translate into the photos if you enjoy the process.  I can’t stress this enough.. this is not the time to pick a fight with your daughter in law about “fill in the blank.”  This stress will transmit in your photos and your attitudes towards each other on photo day!

You will want to keep these portraits forever.  You will certainly be passing these to your children and their children when you are long gone.  So think about creating something spectacular that everyone will cherish.  We can plan in advance wall art and albums.  If we know what we are shooting for, the process will go and feel much smoother.

Does anyone have special needs in the family? Is there an autistic child or even one family member that just hates being photographed.  The more information you give to your photographer up front, the better.  Photography is psychology to a certain degree so the more we understand about our subjects ahead of time then we are able to work within those limitations.
